Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
